Russian Dmitry Tursunov claimed his fourth career ATP title with a 7-6(3), 7-6(4) victory over Australian wild card Chris Guccione at the Medibank International in Sydney.
With the victory, California resident Tursunov becomes the first Russian player to lift the trophy since Alex Metreveli won in 1972 representing the Soviet Union.
In defeating Stanislas Wawrinka, top seed Richard Gasquet, Sebastien Grosjean, Fabrice Santoro and Chris Guccione to claim victory, World No. 35 Tursunov fired 33 aces to just eight double faults. The Russian is now 7-1 lifetime in Sydney, having reached the quarterfinals on his debut in 2006 (l. to Andreev).
Watched by approximately 8,000 fans, French duo Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga saved three match points to clinch their first ATP doubles title together with a 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 (Match TB) win over top seeds Bob and Mike Bryan.
