Fourth seed Fabrice Santoro of France beat compatriot and No. 5 seed Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-4 in the final Sunday for his fifth ATP title. Santoro, 34, was making his debut in Newport. He is 5-6 overall in ATP finals for his 19-year career.
His last title came at Dubai in 2002 (d. El Aynaoui). He also captured crowns at Doha in 2000 (d. Schuettler), Marseille in 1999 (d. Clement) and Lyon in 1997 (d. Haas). His first final came in 1990 at Toulouse (l. to Svensson).
