Four-time Grand Slam doubles champion Max Mirnyi brought years of experience into his new partnership with emerging young star Jamie Murray, and the two made an immediate impact early in 2008.

Mirnyi and Murray captured the Delray Beach title in their fourth tournament as a duo by defeating Bob and Mike Bryan in the final. The following month, in their ATP Masters Series debut at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, they posted wins over reigning Wimbledon champs Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra in the second round and the Bryans in the quarterfinals before losing to eventual titlists Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram in the semifinals.

The 30-year-old Mirnyi, nicknamed “The Beast” for his size and fearless play, came into the partnership as the winner of 32 career titles including dual triumphs at the US Open and Roland Garros. He had also won 12 ATP Masters Series shields at eight of the nine different ATP Masters Series events (Indian Wells eludes his collection), and clinched the Tennis Masters Cup title in 2006 with Swede Jonas Bjorkman.

Murray, nicknamed “Stretch” for his long reach, made his big breakthrough in 2007 by winning three ATP doubles titles with American Eric Butorac. The 22-year-old won his first career title in February at San Jose and once again finished on top in Memphis the following week. In June, he claimed the grass court title in Nottingham.

Both halves of the duo are Wimbledon Mixed Doubles Champions, Mirnyi winning in 1998 with Serena Williams and Murray in 2007 with Jelena Jankovic.
