A 23-year-old Swiss student and part-time winemaker took first prize in the Penn $1,000,000 Bracket Challenge presented by HEAD to choose winners of every match at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters event in Cincinnati.
Riccarda Iten, from Langenthal, Switzerland, correctly identified 15 of the 24 first-round results and the identities of all four semifinalists to earn the most points of any fan. The prize for the best-performed fan is a $2,500 HEAD/Penn shopping spree.
“My boyfriend Oswild told me of the competition and I decided to enter,” said Riccarda, who is studying winemaking at a university in Nyon, south-west Switzerland.
“I didn’t check on how I was doing in the competition every day. I was just very lucky. I don’t really follow tennis and have never attended an ATP tournament,” she said.
“I once tried to play tennis, but that was a long time ago. Maybe I will play tennis after I receive my prize, but I don’t know.”
More than 25,000 fans played the game but the $1 million prize for picking a perfect bracket went unclaimed, with the unexpected early defeats of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and four other seeds in second round action.
Roger Federer, who Riccarda admires, clinched his 50th career singles title and 14th ATP Masters Series shield by beating James Blake in Sunday’s final.
The runner-up in the Penn $1,000,000 Bracket Challenge presented by HEAD was Zoltan Szentpeteri, who wins a $1,500 HEAD/Penn shopping spree while David Stathis finished in third position for a $500 shopping spree.
