Fourth seeds Oliver Marach of Austria and Michal Mertinak of the Slovak Republic defeated No. 2 seeds Martin Garcia and Sebastian Prieto of Argentina 7-6(2), 7-6(8) in Saturday's doubles final in the BCR Open Romania in Bucharest.
Marach and Mertinak teamed up for the first time and they defeated top seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the semifinals. It was Marach's first career ATP title and the fourth for Mertinak, the second of the season (Umag).
Garcia and Prieto were appearing in their seventh career ATP final together (1-6), including their fifth (1-4) of the season. They captured the Buenos Aires title in February and were finalists in Estoril, Bastad and Sopot (all on clay).
In the Sunday's final in Beijing, Fourth seeds Rik de Voest and Ashley Fisher defeated Chris Haggard and Yen-Hsun Lu 67(3), 6-0, 10-6 (Match TB) to win the Beijing Open title in their ATP debut together. De Voest and Fisher had played once previously at the Challenger level, winning Vancouver last month. Fisher, who won the Tokyo title last year and finished runner-up in Ho Chi Minh City in 2005, won his third ATP doubles title. De Voest won his first.
In the semifinals de Voest and Fisher beat No. 2 seeds Scott Lipsky and David Martin. Haggard and Lu, also a first-time pairing, beat No. 1 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna and No. 3 seeds Eric Butorac and Ross Hutchins en route to the final.
Fisher said: "We were a little nervous in the beginning but after losing a tight first set we loosened up and played aggressively and won the no-ad points. In this scoring system 6-0 can be closer than it seems.
"I'm not sure why I've had good results in Asia... maybe because it's closer to Australia - I don't know. Maybe the ball stays a little lower but I haven't noticed a lot of difference here to the rest of the world."
De Voest said: "It was my first time playing in an ATP final, so it was good for me to be playing with Ashley who has won ATP tournaments and reached the semifinals of the US Open. It's always nice to get my first title under my belt. We've now won two titles in a row together - a Challenger and now an ATP title - and hopefully we can play more together."
