Fernando GonzalezSecond seed Fernando Gonzalez (pictured) captured his 10th career ATP title on Sunday over unseeded Italian Simone Bolelli 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-3 at the BMW Open by FWU AG in Munich.

The 27-year-old Chilean remained perfect on clay (10-0) this season with his second ATP title of the year. In February, he won the Vina del Mar title.

Gonzalez had an opportunity to win in straight sets but couldn't convert two match points in the 10th game of the second set. There were no service breaks in the first two sets and Gonzalez broke for the first time in the fifth game of the third set. He then saved two break points in the next game and closed out the two hour and 36-minute match with another break in the ninth game.

Gonzalez converted two of six break points while saving all three break points he faced.

Four of the Chilean's 10 career ATP titles have come on European soil, including 2002 Palermo, 2005 Amersfoort and 2005 Basel.

He is the fifth South American to win the Munich title since 1974, joining Argentines Guillermo Vilas (1975, '78), Guillermo Perez-Roldan (1987-88), Franco Squillari (1999-2000) and David Nalbandian (2005).

"It was really tough and he was playing very good tennis," said Gonzalez. "I had two match points in the second set but I am happy the way I did it. I had three really close matches during the week. I was fighting a lot and this is really good for my tennis and going to increase my confidence. I am really happy the way I was fighting and it was a mental test for me, and I passed it."

When asked about winning his 10th career ATP title, Gonzalez added, "It's really big for me and I am getting older so I will try to celebrate a little bit. You never know when it's going to be your last title. I am having fun out there and I am going to enjoy the moment."

Bolelli, who was appearing in his first ATP final, was trying to become the fifth first time winner on the ATP circuit this year. The 22-year-old Italian was the first player from his country to reach an ATP final this season.

In their previous meeting in the first round of Basel in 2006, Gonzalez prevailed in three tie-breaks.

"Today was very tight and we have similar games and we pushed each other with our forehands, said Bolelli. "It was tight and close and I saved two match points in the second set. I tried to win the match in the third but he was too good. It was close but I am happy to reach my first ATP final."

Bolelli, who came into Munich ranked No. 58 and with a 4-10 career mark on clay, defeated No. 6 seed and countryman Andreas Seppi in the second round and top seed Paul-Henri Mathieu in the semifinals.

The No. 15th-ranked Gonzalez, who was appearing in his 20th career final (10-10), earned €59,100 and 175 South African Airways ATP Rankings points, while Bolelli collected €31,000 and 120 points.
