Spaniard Nicolas Almagro charged to his second title of the Latin American swing and halted David Nalbandian's 10-match winning streak with a 6-1, 7-6(1) victory in the Acapulco final Saturday night. Almagro, who won his third ATP title in Costa do Sauipe last month, is now an ATP-best 15-3 (14-1 on clay) on the year.
World No. 28 Almagro saved both break points he faced and dropped just six points on his first serve. In the first set he conceded just 13 points to the Argentine.
Last week Almagro was a quarterfinalist in Buenos Aires, where his personal-best nine-match winning streak came to an end as he retired against Juan Ignacio Chela with a groin injury.
Almagro improved his career record in completed matches against Top 10 opponents to 4-12; his three previous victories coming against No. 4 Marat Safin at 2005 AMS Rome, No. 9 Guillermo Coria at 2006 Barcelona and No. 7 Tommy Robredo at 2007 AMS Hamburg, all on clay. He also led No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko by a set at 2006 AMS Rome before the Russian was forced to retire.
In 2007 the Spaniard compiled his best season by winning a career-high 34 matches and finishing in Top 30 for first time.
World No. 8 Nalbandian, who had won 24 of his past 26 matches coming into Saturday's final, moved back into the Top 10 of the South African Airways Rankings this week after claiming his eighth career ATP singles title in Buenos Aires last Sunday (d. Acasuso).
The right-hander enjoyed a late season surge last year, claiming back-to-back ATP Masters Series shields in Madrid (d. Federer) and Paris (d. Nadal) to ensure a Top 10 finish for the fifth straight year.
Nalbandian is now 12-2 on the season, with his only previous loss coming against Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in the third round of the Australian Open.
