American Mardy Fish hit 19 aces to extend his perfect 3-0 record against Dmitry Tursunov with a 7-6(7), 6-4 win in one hour and 45 minutes at the BNP Paribas Masters on Monday.
Russian Tursunov, who captured the Indianapolis (d. Dancevic) and Bangkok (d. Becker) titles this year, drops to 1-8 at ATP Masters Series events in 2007.
Fish, who is appearing in Paris for the first time since 2004, will next meet No. 5 seed David Ferrer, who qualified for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai on Saturday.
Shanghai hopeful Mikhail Youzhny recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Arnaud Clement. The Russian hit five aces and converted four of 11 break points to clinch victory in one hour and 22 minutes. Currently 17th in the ATP 2007 Race, Youzhny collects another seven points with the win to move him onto 296 points. He next will face another Shanghai contender, No. 7 seed Fernando Gonzalez, who has 380 points in 7th position. The Chilean has won all three of their previous meetings.
Youzhny is edging closer to 50 match wins on the ATP circuit this season, now improving to 48-22. The World No. 18 won his third career ATP singles title at Rotterdam (d. Ljubicic) earlier in the season, and has reached the quarterfinals or better in nine events, breaking the Top 10 on the South African Airways ATP Rankings for one week during the summer (No. 10 – August 13-19). World No. 53 Clement was competing in Paris for the 10th time, but has never made it past the second round. The 29-year-old Frenchman reached his 10th career ATP singles final in Nottingham (l. to Karlovic) and made the semifinals at Queen’s Club during the grass court season. He now slips to 26-26 for the season.
Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, meanwhile, dismissed Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4, 6-2 in a meeting of two Tennis Masters Cup contenders. Baghdatis began the week at No. 19 in the ATP 2007 Race, moving to within 54 points of No. 8 Tommy Haas by reaching the Basel semifinals last week, while Ferrero came in at No. 22.
Baghdatis will next face Croat Ivan Ljubicic, who currently stands at No. 15 in the Race standings. Ljubicic reached the BNP Paribas Masters final in his last event appearance two years ago.
Mario Ancic (pictured right) ended Paul-Henri Mathieu's outside chance of qualifying for Shanghai when he rallied to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. The big-serving Croat lost just one point on serve in the third set and won 37 of 43 first-serve points during the match.
Stanislas Wawrinka reached the second round for the third successive year by avenging his Madrid defeat to Nicolas Kiefer of Germany. The 22-year-old Wawrinka converted two of four break point opportunities to triumph 7-5, 6-3 in 91 minutes. This season’s Vienna and Stuttgart finalist will next face No. 16 seed Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina.
Argentine qualifier Juan Martin del Potro, who has risen 41 places to No. 51 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings this year, cruised past World No. 35 Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-4, 6-3 in 69 minutes. The 19-year-old also beat Lopez at Memphis in February. He has a 28-24 season record and will next meet No. 4 seed and defending champion Nikolay Davydenko.
Italian Andreas Seppi won the battle of the qualifiers against American Sam Querrey 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 for a place in the second round against No. 11 seed Guillermo Canas of Argentina, who is currently No. 15 in the ATP 2007 Race to Shanghai.
World No. 64 Janko Tipsarevic became the third qualifier to advance on day two, after defeating American qualifier Vince Spadea 7-6(9), 7-6(2) in one hour and 51 minutes. Serbian Tipsarevic hit 16 aces and won 46 of 51 first serve points in the pair's first meeting since Scottsdale in 2005.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Clement: "I was not very consistent and I made many errors, especially in the wrong moments. He was very solid. He didn't do anything extraordinary during the match, but he was very solid from the beginning to the end, and I had some letdowns. When I made errors he took advantage of it and he was able to break me and then to hold his serve. It was a very simple match."
